Processor fan failure

When I switched on my PC, the whole system was dead apart from a tune being played on the internal speaker. I heard none of the usual startup beeps and nothing was displayed on the monitor. On checking, I found the processor fan had seized up.

I assumed either that the Bios chip had been infected by a virus, or that the Bios had shut the system down when the fan seized up, to prevent the PC from overheating. I was unable to find out how to flash a defunct Bios chip or buy a new one, so I resolved the problem by buying a new Socket 7 motherboard and processor fan. I would appreciate your comments.

Some Bios apparently play a tune on the speaker if they detect that the processor cooling fan has failed. Why they should do this instead of just emitting a beep error code is a complete mystery, and we're not surprised that you suspected the Bios had been infected by a virus. It isn't something we've even seen mentioned when browsing websites that contain information about Bios error codes.

Replacing the fan would probably have cured your problem. Although there are viruses that can destroy Bios chips, we don't know of any that actually reprogram them to do something else such as play tunes.
